SECTION 1.

Question asked in the House of Commons, June 2, 1908.

Mr. Mitchell-Thomson,--To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any official information with regard to the recent fracas between British municipal police and Chinese police in the Shanghae Settlement; and whether, in view of the fact that the development of the district since 1898, when the boundary-line on the north of the Settlement was last fixed, has now made that line entirely an artificial one and a constant source of friction, he will now press for a rearrangement of the boundary between Shanghae and the Pao-shan district in the interests of harmonious administration.

Answer.

We have no information with regard to the incident referred to, which, therefore, was probably not of a grave character, but His Majesty's Minister at Peking will be requested to report the facts and also to furnish his opinion as to the advisability of the course indicated in the second part of the honourable Member's question.
